Dermatology Department


Dermatology... We provide the Skin Solutions.

        The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology is known for its academic excellence, maximum number of OPD patients among various specialties and providing latest in the field of contact dermatitis, dermatosurgery and cosmetic dermatology. It has became the torch bearer among the dermatology units in the region.

       The department was started by Dr. V.K. Sood when he joined DMC in 1969. He retired in 1998 after building up a teaching department of high standards.  After Dr. Sood's retirement , department was headed by Dr. Y.C. Minocha and Dr. Alka Dogra respectively.

       Currently Dr. Sunil Kumar Gupta is heading the department . Apart from general dermatology, other areas of intrest of Dr. Gupta are Sexually transmitted diseases , Dermatosurgery and cosmetic dermatology.

       Department has two hard working assistant professors namely Dr. Sukhjot and Dr. Vidushi.

    The department has a harmonious environment which ensures the smooth functioning. There is whole hearted involvement and efficiency of all the members of the non-teaching staff, about 15 in number.

     Post graduates from department are doing very well both in India and abroad and department is proud of its alumini.


Dermatology has evolved in a very big way with lots of aspects to be practised. Various clinical areas include:

  • General Dermatology  
  • Venereology including AIDS
  • Leprosy
  • Dermatosurgery
  • Cosmetic dermatology
  • Photodermatology
  • Paediatric Dermatology
  • Dermatopathology

       PHO - The department is part of an NGO group ‘People's Health Organisation’ headed by Dr. G.S. Gilada which is contributing to AIDS control through counselling of STD patients, public health lectures, MBBS students’ quiz etc.


       Publications from the department are often seen in top national and international journals including International Journal of Leprosy.

      Department was awarded ‘Excellence in clinical teaching’ in 2001 based on UG students’ feed back.


  1. Allergy Testing Clinic (Intra-dermal testing) for urticaria, atopic eczema, allergic rhinitis. 
  2. Standard Patch Testing Clinic for contact dermatitis.
  3. Leprosy Clinic - This is run every Friday in the department. The multidrug therapy provided by the Government is being distributed to the patients, under ' National Leprosy Eradication Programme'.
  4. STD Clinic with HIV Counselling.
  5. Pigmentation clinic for leucoderma, hypermelanotic disorders. 
  6. Dermatosurgery and Cosmetology Clinic - In this specialized clinic, aesthetic dermatology procedures are carried out i.e. chemical peeling, surfication, radiofrequency ablation,    cryotherapy, punch grafting in vitiligo and chemical cautery.
  7. A special skin lab for KOH, tissue smear, gram stain, Giemsa stain and Slit      & Smear is part of the OPD Complex.


  1. Dermatology department is always part of all medical camps organized by DMCH with largest number of patients seen among the specialities.
  2. Prof. & Head, Dr. Alka Dogra has conducted numerous public health lectures and contributed more than 100 write-ups in the various leading newspapers.
  3. The department of has been providing integrated services with community medicine in Rural Health Centre Pohir & Urban Health Centre, Jamalpur for more than a decade.


  1. Whole body PUVA Unit– This modality is present in very few centers in North India. It is useful in the treatment of Vitiligo, Psoriasis etc. 
  2. Pulse Therapy - In our wards, special stress is given on pulse therapy which is routinely being given for serious vesico-bullous disorders like pemphigus, collagen disorders like SLE, systemic sclerosis, immunological disorders like vitiligo, lichen planus etc. This pulse therapy is specially recognized by 'National pulse therapy foundation of India'.
  3. Skin Pharmacy - We have a well equipped pharmacy where products are prepared and dispensed at a very low cost to serve the weaker sections of the society.
  4. Teaching Methods - Modern teaching methods are used for post graduates & under graduates, which include audio visual aids, projection microscope for histopathology and a well-equipped departmental library for PG students.


We plan to add hair transplant and whole body UVB therapy in the near future.
