Obst. & Gynae Department


History of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recounts the events and changes that have taken place over many centuries in society; changes in scientific knowledge and the way it is communicated, changes in technology and changes in the lives and times of those who have dedicated their efforts to the health of women and their progeny.

The Torch Bearers:-

At the beginning of Dayanand Medical College in 1964, the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was headed by Dr. Raj Cheema in the old campus. In 1987, Dr. Rama Sofat took over as head. Facilities for endoscopic surgeries and colposcopy were introduced. The reigns of the department were taken over by Dr. Kumkum Avasthi in 2001 when the postgraduate and diploma degrees were duly recognized by the MCI. The Intrauterine Insemination lab was started and new gadgets for fetal monitoring were installed. Presently, the department is headed by Dr Ashima Taneja. The department now has a videocolposcope, LEEP electrosurgical procedure facilities, an IUI complex with TVS and sperm preparation facilities. There are nine consultants at present. 

State-of-Art Facilities:-

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides a wide range of tertiary surgical facilities imcluding:- 

  • Non-stress test and continuous fetal heart monitoring by tocodyana-mometer

  • Epidural analgesia in labor (painless deliveries).

  • Facilities for programmed labor and active management of labor

  • Trans abdominal and trans vaginal sonography.

  • Semen preparation and intrauterine insemination (IUI)

  • Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries including LAVH, TLH, Hysteroscopic myomectomy, septal resection, tubal catheterization.

  • Laparoscopic tubal ligation.

  • Cervical cancer screening (pap smear, HPV DNA, Video Colposcopy, Cervical biopsy, cryocautery, LEEP)

  • Non descent vaginal hysterectomies

  • Tubal reconstructive surgeries.

  • Urogenital surgeries.

  • Radical surgeries for malignancies

  • Uterine and selective arterial embolization.

  •  IVF (in vitro fertilization) lab

Speciality Clinics:-

               Mon, Thu: Antenatal and Postnatal Tues, Wed: Infertility, Adolescent, Endocrinological disorders Fri, Sat: Menopausal, Cancer, Urogenital diseases

Special Inpatient Services:-

               Special room adjoining labor room with intrapartum fetal monitoring and delivery facilities Separate departmental billing counter Dietary facility.

               Free vaginal deliveries for the uncomplicated needy patients. Free MTP with Laparoscopic tubal ligation under Family Welfare Clinic.

Other Activities:-

               Counseling for HPV screening testing & vaccination of reproductive age group. Cervical screening of the females Free counseling of Infertile couple once a month. Counseling for free HIV testing in women. Regular free Gynaecological camps organized by DMCH Free camps for diagnosis of anaemia in pregnancy and its treatment

Future plans:-

                 Prenatal diagnosis and Genetic Clinic.
