Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H) Ludhiana, Punjab, India, is a 1625-bed tertiary care, NABH-accredited teaching hospital in North India, affiliated with the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Punjab, recognised by NMC.

The Institution has an imposing complex of modern buildings and is equipped with all kinds of modern facilities for providing excellent care to patients and training to undergraduate and postgraduate students. All the clinical departments, along with the diagnostic laboratories, provide round-the-clock service at the campus.

History of DMC&H

1934

Founding of Arya Medical School

Dr. Banarsi Dass Soni, Ex-Capt. I.M.S with a missionary zeal for medical education and patient care started “Arya Medical School” for L.S.M.F of Punjab State Medical Faculty. It was started in a rented building in Civil Lines (Malerkotla House) with 20 students

1935

Hospital Begins in Madhopuri

The Hospital was started in rented building in Madhopuri. The LSMF course was recognized by Punjab Medical Council for 1st& 2nd year classes

1936

3rd Year LSMF Course Recognized

Punjab Medical Council Recognised the LSMF course for 3rd year and so on.

1937

Relocation to Own Building at Civil Lines

The college shifted to its own building at Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

1938

Full LSMF Diploma Recognition by Punjab Medical Council

The college was recognized for all classes of LSMF Diploma by Punjab Medical Council.

1939

Renamed Dayanand Hospital & Intake Increased to 35 Students

The attached hospital was named “Dayanand Hospital”. The school was permitted to admit 35 students in LSMF course.

1940

Dayanand Hospital Shifted to Civil Lines Campus with 120 Beds

Dayanand Hospital shifted to present college campus site at Civil Lines with 120 beds.

1954

ANM Nursing Course Launched

DMC, School of Nursing started (ANM course).

1964

Transformation into MBBS College

Arya Medical School was upgraded to MBBS course under the name “Dayanand Medical College” and management was taken over by a galaxy of prominent people of Ludhiana under the aegis of “Dayanand Medical College & Hospital Managing Society”.

Sh. Hans Raj Dhanda was elected as Founder President and Sh. Jagdish Lal Behal as Founder Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society. MBBS course was started with 50 MBBS seats.

1967

Inder Pal Dhir Elected Secretary

Sh. Inder Pal Dhir was elected as the Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society.

1969

OPD Shifted to Tagore Nagar & GNM Nursing Started

The outpatient department (OPD) was shifted to newly built OPD block at present hospital campus in Tagore Nagar.

DMC School of Nursing upgraded to add 3 year GNM nursing course with 20 students.

1974

B.L. Munjal Elected President

Sh. Brijmohan Lall Munjal was elected as President, DMC&H Managing Society.

1977

PG Course Started in General Medicine

PG course started (General Medicine)

1978

Beds Increased to 518 with New Wards

At the Hospital campus, the bed strength was increased to 518 beds with addition of more wards (Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology and Psychiatry).

1979

Prem Nath Gupta Elected Secretary

Sh. Prem Nath Gupta was elected as Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society.

1980

First Dialysis Unit in Punjab

First Hospital in Punjab to setup Dialysis Unit.

1983

ICCU, ICU & Plastic Surgery Set Up

ICCU, ICU and Plastic Surgery departments set up at the hospital campus.

1985

Neuro Centre & Diagnostics Added

Speech and Hearing Centre (Mela Ram Neuro Otology Centre) set up at Hospital Campus.

Facilities for upper GI Endoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Ultrasound, Echocardiography and CT Scan added.

Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery set up at Hospital campus.

1988

New Super Specialties, Emergency Block & Rural Centre Added

New departments of Neuro-otology, Nephrology, Paediatric surgery, Gastroenterology, Cardiology and Oncology were established at hospital campus.

Fully equipped Emergency Block providing round the clock services established at hospital campus.

Rural Health Centre at Pohir started.

1989

GNM Seats Increased to 30

GNM Nursing seats increased from 20 to 30 per year.

1990

Beds Increased to 675 & Urology Department Added

Bed strength increased to 675. The super speciality department of Urology added.

1991

Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Department Started

Department of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery was started.

1992

Beds Increased to 750 & External Fixator Facility Started

Bed strength increased to 750 beds. The facility for external fixators started.

1995

Beds Increased to 1050, MBBS Seats to 70

Bed strength increased to 1050 beds MBBS seats increased from 50 to 70 per year

1996

Urban Health Centre Started at Kirti Nagar

Urban Health Centre at Kirti Nagar was started.

2000

Beds Increased to 1100, Dumra Auditorium & Ethics Committee Established

Bed strength increased to 1100 beds. Dumra Auditorium for multipurpose activities including indoor sports established. First “Institutional Ethics Committee” constituted.

2001

Hero DMC Heart Institute Started with 150 Beds

“Hero DMC Heart Institute” started with 150 beds along with state of the art investigative and treatment facility.

2002

BSc Nursing Started with 50 Seats

DMC&H College of Nursing started BSc Nursing with 50 seats per year.

2003

Amrit Nagpal Elected Secretary

Sh. Amrit Nagpal was elected as Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society.

2004

Prem Kumar Gupta Elected Secretary,
ICU Block Inaugurated

Sh. Prem Kumar Gupta was elected as Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society. 120 bedded Sh Prem Nath Gupta ICU Block inaugurated.

2006

Introduction of Superspeciality Courses & Post Basic Nursing

Super speciality Courses started (DM courses in Cardiology & Gastroenterology; and MCh Plastic Surgery).

Post Basic Nursing started with 30 seats per year.

2007-2010

S.K. Munjal Elected President, BSc Seats Raised, MSc Nursing Started

Sh. Sunil Kant Munjal was elected as President, DMC&H Managing Society.

BSc Nursing seats increased from 70 to 100 per year.

GNM Nursing phased out.

MSc Nursing course was started with 25 seats across 5 specialities.

2012

Paramedical College Started, NAT Testing & Shimlapuri Centre Launched

DMC&H College of Paramedical Sciences started with BSc (135 seats) and Diploma (100 seats) courses started.

NAT testing started for safe blood and blood products.

Urban Health Centre at Shimlapuri was started.

2013

R&D Centre Setup, Post Basic Nursing Ended

R&D Centre established. Post Basic Nursing phased out.

2015

New Campus & USG Training Started

New modern building of “College Campus” with state of the art facilities inaugurated. Training in Ultrasonography started with 4 seats

2016

MBBS Seats Increased to 100

MBBS seats increased from 70-100 per year

2017

Malakpur Nursing Campus Inaugurated, NPCC Started

Ultramodern DMC&H College of Nursing, Malakpur at a sprawling campus was inaugurated with 100 seats of BSc, 25 seats of MSc.

Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care Course started with 10 seats per year

2019

Bed Strength Increased to 1605

Bed strength increased to 1605 beds

2020

MPhil Psychology Started, MD/MS Seats Increased to 87

Course in MPhil Psychology started. MD/ MS broad specialities seats offered in 19 Courses increased from 72 to 87 per year.

2021

PhD in Public Health Started, Beds Increased to 1625, MD/MS Seats to 98

PhD (Public Health-Neurosciences) started

Bed strength increased to 1625 beds

MD/ MS broad specialities seats offered in 19 Courses increased from 87 to 98 per year.

2023

Bipin Gupta Elected Secretary

Sh. Bipin Gupta was elected as Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society.

2024

MD/MS Seats Increased to 101, DM/MCh to 26

MD/ MS broad specialities seats offered in 19 Courses increased from 98 to 101 per year. DM/MCh super specialities seats increased from 24 to 26 seats per year in 10 courses.

2025

College of Physiotherapy Initiated

DMC&H College of Physiotherapy initiated.
