Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry is well established, integral unit of DMC&H, Ludhiana. Started way back in 1970, it offers state of the art services for patients with mental illness including in-patient facilities, electroconvulsive therapy, range of latest pharmacotherapeautic agents and psychosocial interventions. It is a sought after tertiary care PG teaching department in the region. 

Currently department is headed by Dr. Navkiran S. Mahajan who is Professor & Head of Department, other Faculty members include Dr. Pankaj Kumar (Professor) and Dr. Mitthat Miglani is working as an Assistant Professor.

The entire faculty is dedicated to providing excellent mental health care to all those in need. 

Teaching Programme

The department has been successfully running a robust  Post Graduate teaching programme since 1985 with an intake of 03 students per year. The residents gain immense knowledge and experience as they are exposed to wide variety of patients.

General Adult Psychiatry:-

Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders, Delirium & Organic Mental Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Bipolar Mood Disorders, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Personality Disorders, Psychosomatic Disorders.           

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Mental Retardation, Learning Disorders, ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Geriatric Psychiatry

Dementias, Behavioral Disorders of old age, Depression in old age, Issues related to elder abuse.

Alcohol and Drug De-addiction

Alcohol Detoxification, Relapse Prevention, De-addiction of opium & derivatives, Smack, Heroin, Cocaine, Cannabis, Organic Solvents, Recreation/Party Drugs, smoking and        tobacco.

Psychosexual Disorders

Pharmacological Treatment, Couple Sex Therapy, Gender Identity Disorders

Psychotherapy

CBT, Grief Therapy, Marital Therapy, Family Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Crisis Intervention.

Departmental Achievements

1. Department has multiple publications both in National & International Journals of Psychiatry.
2. The Department has successfully organized various conferences, CMEs and PG Development Programmes in the past and endeavors to do so in future well. 
3. The department continues to participate in multiple research projects including clinical drug trials. In this regard the department has also been audited and approved by USFDA.  

Public Heath Education

The Department regularly organizes awareness programmes for the public, employees and students on the occasion of the World Mental Health Day and Suicide Prevention Day every year.
