Dr Sarit Sharma is working as Professor in the department of Community Medicine and has an experience of more than 22 years as a medical teacher, researcher, health educator and team leader. He did his MBBS from GGS Medical College Faridkot, MD in Community Medicine from Govt Medical College Patiala and postgraduate course (diploma) in hospital management from NIHFW, New Delhi (Govt of India). He completed Advance Course in Medical Education (ACME) from CMC Ludhiana- MCI Nodal Center for Medical Education (2016-17).
He is a life member of various professional associations like IAPSM, IPHA, IAAH, BPNI, HISI, CCFI, DFCA and Health-Population & Perspectives (NIHFW, New Delhi). He has been Governing Council Member of IAPSM-National (2025-26, 2020-22, 2008-09), General Secretary IAPSM-North zone (2024-27), President of IAPSM-Punjab chapter (2017-23), Vice President of IAPSM-North Zone chapter (2016-17), Vice President of IAPSM-Punjab chapter (2012-13, 2014-17) and Executive Member IAPSM-North Zone Governing Council (2004-2008). He is also the founding General Secretary of IAAH-Punjab chapter and HISI Ludhiana chapter.
Dr Sharma is a recipient of many awards, honours and fellowships including 37th Dr S. Radhakrishnan Memorial National Teachers Award (2021), YL Vasudeva oration award (2022), Top Education Oral Presentation Award during APICS-Singapore (2024), Award of appreciation for contributions during Covid-19 by Govt of Punjab (2021), Fellowship of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine-FIAPSM (2020), Fellowship of International Medical Sciences Academy-FIMSA (2016) and Fellowship in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology-FICHE (2013) from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Dr Sharma takes a keen interest in academic activities. He has authored a book on Preventive & Social Medicine, a chapter on antimicrobial stewardship, an online course for Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) (Available at: https://learningce.shea-online.org/content/healthcare-associated-infections#group-tabs-node-course-default2) and published more than 110 research papers in International & National journals He has attended more than 200 International & National conferences, workshops and trainings, and presented many papers and guest lectures. He is a Member of the Academic Council- Adesh University, Bathinda (2023 onwards), and Member-Board of Studies for PG Programme- M.Sc. Epidemiology, Swami Rama Himalayan University (HIMS) Jolly Grant, Dehradun (2023 onwards). He has organized more than 35 conferences, workshops, trainings, seminars etc. He is editor-in-chief of ‘The Journal of Community Health Management, member Editorial board for Indian Journal of Community Medicine (2022-23, 2024-25), Indian Journal of Youth and Adolescent Health and Indian Journal of Community Health. He is a reviewer for many reputed, indexed national and international journals.
Dr Sharma also actively contributes in many National Health Programs, trainings, surveys and surveillance activities. He is currently Chairperson of ZTF Operational Research Committee (National TB Elimination Program)- North Zone, a member of Punjab State HIV Surveillance team since 2010, trainer for NTEP and Infant and Young Child feeding (IYCF) and has completed NABH Assessor course. He was Chairperson- NTEP State task force (STF) Punjab (2017-23) and State Nodal Officer for IAPSM World Health Day quiz competitions (2022-25) for Punjab.
He has been a senior investigator for many national-level surveys. He was the State Nodal Officer-Punjab for Sub-national certification of TB Free status activity jointly conducted by IAPSM, ICMR-NIE and NIRT Chennai (2020-23). He has been appointed an independent monitor on behalf of WHO for monitoring NID & SNID rounds of Pulse Polio Immunization on various occasions. He participated in NCCPE tOPV-bOPV switch validation exercise and monitored Odisha state. He has been Investigator for many ICMR and Government-sponsored research projects and has also guided 22 PhD/DM/MD Theses and 05 ICMR STS projects.
Dr Sarit Sharma is currently NABH accreditation coordinator (Quality & Safety), Admin I/C of Infection prevention & control (IPC) and Biomedical waste management, and member of curriculum committee of medical education unit in DMC&H.
