Overview of Department of Forensic Medicine
Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, situated at Level IV of the college building with the Mortuary located at the hospital building, has adequate space for storing the bodies and is well equipped with modern facilities for conducting Medico Legal Post-Mortem Examinations. The department indulges in teaching, training and practicing latest knowledge of forensic medicine, jurisprudence and toxicology, this includes up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, rules, acts, duties and ethics related to modern medical practice.
Facilities
Academic Activities
- Department is fully furnished & well equipped for imparting quality education to U.G. students according to latest NMC CBME curriculum, including skill-based teaching.
- The department undertakes various research & academic activities and has number of books (nationally acclaimed) and research articles to their names.
- We impart latest and practice based teaching to medical students through lecture, practical & demonstration classes via different audio-visual aids i.e. LCD, OHP, Black board, digital board and field visits.
- Regular Tutorials/ practical’s/ demonstrations are held, where learning of the students are carried out to get their spirited participation for day- to-day assessment record of the students.
- Group discussion, role playing as in court of law, crime scene inspection etc.
- Medico-legal demo case examination, documentation, reporting and interpretation of opinion like in case of sexual assault- victim & assailant, identification of age, sex, autopsy report, viscera preservation- reporting, death, fitness, sickness, drunkenness etc. certification.
- Field visit - Visit to mortuary facility for practical demonstration of post mortem autopsy.
- Other Services and trainings- Provided to postgraduate trainees and medical officers.
- Faculty members of department provide knowledge through workshops and seminars, to medical practitioner about latest updates in medico legal framework.
Services:-
- The department also actively participates as expert as part of medical board for conducting Medico Legal Post Mortem Examinations by the Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana.
- The faculties of the department are on a daily duty roster and participate in the audit of the MLRs to improve the quality of documentation of Medicolegal Reports.
- Interns are posted compulsorily during their rotatory Internship for 07 days in the department.
- Elective training of MBBS students after Part 1 of Final Prof. examination.
- Besides the above, the department conducts teaching classes for the B.Sc. Nursing students at DMCH College of Nursing, Ludhiana for newly included Forensic Nursing curriculum in their 5th semester.

- 4 Laboratories namely Forensic Serology, Forensic Histopathology, Forensic Anthropology & Forensic Toxicology for teaching purposes.
- Museum of Forensic medicine & Toxicology having wax models, demo poisons, weapons and specimens.
- Fully equipped Mortuary - including 1 autopsy room having 2 autopsy tables, 1 cold storage room having deep freezers.
- Departmental Library: having. no. of latest books, bare acts and journals. Many a times this space is utilized for seminars by U.G students and interns.
