Department of General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery is one of the founding departments of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, with a legacy of surgical training and patient care that predates the college's establishment in 1964. Over six decades, it has grown into one of North India's largest academic surgical departments — combining high-volume clinical service, postgraduate training, and active clinical research.

In 2026, the department entered the robotic era with the launch of its robotic surgery programme, adding robotic-assisted procedures to an already comprehensive portfolio of advanced laparoscopic, thoracoscopic and laser surgery. The department has also been accredited to run the Fellowship of the National Board (FNB) in Minimal Access Surgery — making it a recognised national training centre for advanced laparoscopic surgery.

Infrastructure

The department functions through four surgical units, supported by:

17 operation theatres — 13 state-of-the-art elective OTs with hydraulic remote-controlled tables, and 4 dedicated emergency OTs (2 clean, 2 septic) for round-the-clock trauma and emergency surgery
150 inpatient beds across four surgical wards
23-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit with central monitoring and 18 ventilators
27-bed surgical recovery with central monitoring
15-bed pre-operative area with a dedicated Pre-Anaesthesia Check-up (PAC) clinic and counselling room
Advanced surgical energy and imaging systems, including harmonic scalpel, advanced bipolar vessel sealing, 4K laparoscopy, indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared fluorescence imaging, and surgical laser platforms

Robotic Surgery

The department has commenced robotic-assisted surgery. Robotic-assisted procedures currently offered include:

Gallbladder and Hernia surgery (Cholecystectomy, Inguinal and Ventral hernia repair)
Colorectal resections , Appendectomies
Bariatric and Metabolic procedures
Thoracic and Mediastinum surgery
Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery
Renal and Adrenal surgery
Hiatus hernia and Pelvic Tumors, Splenectomy

Robotic surgery offers patients enhanced precision, smaller incisions, less post-operative pain and faster recovery in suitable cases. Patients can discuss robotic options for their condition in the surgical OPD.

Sub-Speciality Services

Minimal Access (Laparoscopic) Surgery

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and CBD exploration, appendectomy, hernia repair (TEP, TAPP, eTEP, IPOM), fundoplication, colectomies and rectopexy, splenectomy, liver surgery, kidney and adrenal surgery, and diagnostic laparoscopy. ICG fluorescence-guided cholangiography is used for safer biliary surgery in selected cases.

Complex Hernia & Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Advanced repairs for large and recurrent hernias, including eTEP and component-separation techniques, and management of loss-of-domain hernias using Botulinum toxin and progressive pneumoperitoneum.

Thoracic Surgery & VATS

The department pioneered Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) at DMCH and offers thoracoscopic and open procedures: decortication for empyema, lobectomy and pneumonectomy, mediastinal mass resection, lung biopsies, and management of thoracic trauma.

Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass for obesity and metabolic disorders, delivered through a structured bariatric programme with pre-operative counselling and long-term follow-up.

Colorectal Surgery

Laparoscopic and open surgery for benign and malignant colorectal conditions, including colectomies, rectal resections and rectopexy, and management of complex anorectal disease.

Proctology & Laser Surgery

A dedicated laser surgery programme for piles, fistula-in-ano and pilonidal sinus, alongside stapler haemorrhoidectomy and sphincter-preserving fistula procedures (LIFT) — minimally invasive, day-care-friendly treatment with faster recovery.

Varicose Veins

Endovenous laser treatment of varicose veins along with conventional surgical options, offering a minimally invasive alternative with early return to routine activity.

Breast & Endocrine Surgery

Evaluation and surgery for benign and malignant breast disease, and thyroid and parathyroid surgery including minimally invasive (“keyhole”) approaches.

Trauma & Emergency General Surgery

24×7 emergency surgical cover with triage-based care, dedicated emergency OTs, bedside ultrasound, arterial blood-gas analysis, portable X-ray and echocardiography, backed by the surgical ICU.

Diabetic Foot & Wound Care

Comprehensive limb-preservation care: debridement, advanced dressings, offloading and revascularisation referral, with amputation as a last resort.

Head & Neck Surgery

Surgery for benign and malignant conditions of the head and neck, including salivary gland and soft-tissue tumours, alongside the thyroid and parathyroid work of the endocrine service.

General Surgical Services

Anorectal benign anomalies, testicular disorders, renal calculi and renal malignancy, soft-tissue tumours, and the full spectrum of elective and emergency general surgery.

Academics & Research

NEW: National Board Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery

The department has been accredited to run the Fellowship of the National Board (FNB) in Minimal Access Surgery — a national-level fellowship training the next generation of laparoscopic and robotic surgeons.

The department runs a structured MS (General Surgery) residency programme and the FNB (Minimal Access Surgery) fellowship, and is actively engaged in clinical research, with faculty publications in indexed national and international journals and ongoing prospective studies in minimal access surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and surgical outcomes. Recent departmental work includes prospective studies on ICG fluorescence-guided cholangiography and enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal (eTEP) hernia repair.

Dr. Atul Mishra is a Professor and Head of Department of General Surgery, DMC&H. He did his MBBS in 1992 and MS in 1996 from King George Medical College, Luknow and FRCS from UK. He has been trained in Gastro-surgery, Advanced laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic (VATS) surgery. He has numerous publications.
