Pharmacology forms an essential component of medical sciences and it contributes to all the specialities and super specialities. The Department was established as part of the Medical College in 1966, and has since seen the regular addition of several new facilities. Central Animal House was established in 1970’s. Drug Information Centre was started in 2009. The department was established as the first ADR monitoring Centre in Punjab under Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) in 2010. The Materiovigilance Centre was established in 2015 and was among the first four centres in the country. The department is recognised by NMC to train four MD students per year.
UG teaching & training program
As per latest CBME curriculum, Small Group Teachings, Self-Directed Learning, Case Based Learning, Elective Module Training, Tutorials, etc. are conducted for MBBS students. UGs are trained in research & academics in such a way that they excel in university & national/international entrance examinations.
PG teaching & training program
Training in four pillars of Pharmacology viz. Experimental, Chemical, Clinical and Ethno pharmacology (ECCE) has resulted in 100% placement of PG students at highly reputed academic institutes, corporate hospitals and pharmaceutical industry.
Assets
The department is well-equipped with UG Laboratories for training in clinical pharmacology, experimental pharmacology and clinical pharmacy. The department also houses Research Laboratory with high end equipment, Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory, Computer Assisted Laboratory, Skill Laboratory, Animal House registered with CCSEA and well stocked Museum.
Clinical Services
The department has established drug information centre (DIC), ADR monitoring Centre (AMC), two-bedded Clinical Pharmacology Unit. The department provides services pertaining to drug information in the form of Drug Updates & Drug Formulary; monitoring and reporting of Adverse Effects of drugs. The faculty undertakes research projects for UG students as part of DHR-STS projects and participates as PI and Co-PI in ICMR/Industry/Research Institute funded projects; Quality control services like prescription audit, patient file audit, antibiotic audit are being provided in accordance with NABH guidelines.
The departmental faculty is involved in a number of Institutional Committees like Medical Education Unit and Curriculum Committee, Drugs and Therapeutic Committee, Hospital Infection & Prevention Control Committee, Institutional Animal Ethics Committee, Drug Trial Ethics committee, Institutional Ethics Committee and Gender Harassment Committee. The department has been organizing workshops, CMEs and conferences regularly to update the knowledge and skills of Health Care Professionals including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff.
