The department was established in the year 1964.   During its infancy, the department worked in collaboration with Biochemistry under the headship of Dr. A.P. Sharma.  It was under his stewardship that MD Physiology was started with Dr. Lily Walia as the first PG Candidate.  The department got its independent identity in 1989 under the headship of Dr. (Mrs.) G.K. Ahuja, a teacher par excellence and it was during her tenure that MD course got recognized in 2005.  Dr. Lily Walia became the next head in 2005.

Currently the department is under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Vidushi Gupta who took over as head in 2012.  The academic staff of the department comprises of highly dedicated team of faculty members who have contributed publications in various National & International Journals and are actively involved in imparting concept based & clinically relevant learning to the students of MBBS, MD, B.Sc. Nursing, Paramedical Sciences and M.Phil Psychology.  They also actively participate in academic and non-academic institutional activities.  The whole faculty of the department is also involved in conducting the electives of the students of MBBS Final Prof. Part-II. The teachers also help the Undergraduates in various ICMR projects.  The whole faculty has received formal training in medical education.  The teaching of the department is well appreciated in student feedback.
