Professor Ajit Sood is an eminent gastroenterologist and academic, currently serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana. With over 40 years of medical experience, he is nationally and internationally recognized for his pioneering work in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, and hepatitis C.
He was the first to establish the epidemiology of ulcerative colitis in India and has led groundbreaking genetic and microbiome studies, including India's first GWAS on IBD. His work has been published in leading journals like Gut, Nature Genetics, and the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis. He has also been a key figure in introducing fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for ulcerative colitis in India.
Professor Sood is the founder of the Colitis and Crohn’s Foundation (India) and the Digestive Diseases Care Foundation, both of which focus on education, patient care, and public health outreach. He has received numerous honors, including the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award and several national orations.
