About Doctor
Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander is professor of Cardiology & Principal of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.
He passed MBBS from the Government Medical College, Patiala with Honor’s (> 70% marks in each subject) and as the second-best graduate of the University. During graduation he was awarded a Merit Scholarship and 3 Silver Medals. He did MD in Medicine and DM in Cardiology from PGIMER, Chandigarh in 1985 & 87 respectively. He Joined Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana in 1988 as Lecturer, became Reader in 1994 and started the cardiology unit in 2000. Was Medical Superintendent of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital from 1998 to 2001. Was instrumental in the conception, planning, construction and progress of Hero DMC Heart Institute, a tertiary cardiac care centre of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital. Presently, it is a 181-bed facility having two cath labs and five operating rooms offering comprehensive heart care facilities in Invasive and Non-invasive cardiology. Department performs all state-of-the-art procedures in interventional cardiology and runs Medical Council of India approved DM program in Cardiology (5 seats per year) and has MCh program in cardiac surgery and is one of the most popular cardiology departments in north India.
Has published 302 research papers, 142 of them in foreign Journals of repute like: The Lancet, Nature Genetics, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology and Annals of Human Genetics. Has presented 149 papers at national and international conferences. Has contributed 92 chapters in books. Have written and published 18 textbooks of Medicine and Cardiology, including The Yearbook of Medicine 2018, 2019 & 2020: The Progress in Medicine & Medicine Update 2016, Postgraduate Medicine Textbook, Hypertension Reviews 2020, Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease in Asia 2022(Springer International Publishing), and ten books of cardiology. He has been Editor of Cardiology section of the popular API Textbook of Medicine (8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Editions). Has been a Supervisor/co-supervisor of 52 MD, 18 DM and 4 PhD theses.
Medical Director of Ludhiana Rotary Pacemaker Bank which has implanted 100 free pacemakers to needy patients. Senate member of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (2009-2011). Member of the Governing Board of the Cardiology Society of India for 8 years. Has organized 11 national-level conferences. Organising secretary of APICON 2014 held in Ludhiana.
He was awarded Dr. K. Sharan Cardiology Excellence award by IMA India for the year 2004. Has been a member of the core committee, which has formulated the Indian Guidelines Management of Hypertension in 2001, 2009, 2013 & 2019. Awarded Dr B C Roy National Award for the year 2006 for the development of specialties from the President of India in 2008. Awarded distinguished achiever State award from the government of Punjab. Name figured in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the largest vegetable heart mosaic to create awareness.
